33 Gyrn Ddu SW, Llanaelhaearn
PRN 611 NGR SH 396466 SAM

A simple round cairn, 12m diameter and up to 2m high, on the summit of a promontory W of Gyrn Ddu. Built of large slabs all as lichened as the natural scree nearby so clearly not a recent walkers’ cairn. There is no obvious kerbing or ‘laid’ revetment but some larger slabs seem to have been set as an outer 'face', leaning inward on edge. There are two small hollows in the top from attempts at robbing and a rectangular climbers’ shelter at the E side. There is a stone-built roundhouse settlement (unexcavated) about 100m to the NE that could be associated with the cairn. The cairn lies in a slightly false crest position that enhances the natural dramatic views to the SE to W so possibly was designed to be on the skyline viewed from the Llanaelhaearn area.
